L’arcipelago delle Similan, dichiarato parco nazionale nel 1982, è una meta obbligata per i subacquei di tutto il mondo. I fondali di queste nove isole granitiche, avvolte da una fitta giungla, sono caratterizzati da formazioni rocciose e grandi massi colonizzati da giardini di corallo duro, spugne barile ed enormi gorgonie che raggiungono anche i 3 metri. Queste formazioni creano un ambiente unico caratterizzato da grotte e tunnel, tranquillamente attraversabili, dove trovano riparo molti pesci tropicali di piccole e grandi dimensioni come tonni, carangidi e Jack Fish, squali leopardo, pinna bianca e pinna nera. Lo sperone roccioso di Richelieu Rock, situato tra l’arcipelago delle isole Surin e quello delle Similan, è uno dei siti più famosi dove immergersi alla ricerca degli squali balena, che raggiungono questa roccia per nutrirsi del plancton presente nelle acque circostanti.
