Travel Sub Ustica: Diving on the Island of Circe

Go scuba takes you on a Sub trip to the north of the Sicilian island, to discover exciting diving in Ustica

According to legend, the pearl of the Mediterranean is the island of Circe , the sorceress of the Odyssey who enchanted men, today enchants divers with its blue seabed and transparent water that allows visibility up to 30 meters.

The establishment of the protected marine area has helped to preserve the natural biodiversity that we can discover along the coasts of the island.

The reserve is home to 50% of the marine species present in the Mediterranean, thanks also to the ban on the transit of boats, marine life is teeming with specimens: groupers, moray eels, bream, sea urchins, brightly colored starfish.

The spots are suitable for different types of experience, the depths start from 12 meters up to 50 to satisfy all divers, but also the type of diving is varied: shoals, caves and walls await you!

The top 5:

·          SECCA DELLA COLOMBARA: with different sides that allow you to set the diving based on the level of certification and experience.

·          CALA GALERA: The “Galera” is a strip of rock emerging perpendicular to the coast that recalls the shape of a Roman ship, required level open water

·          PUNTA DELL’ARPA: takes its name from its shape and is to be considered partly in landslide and partly along the wall. Suitable for open water and advanced

·          IL SECCHITELLO: Considered the most challenging dive of the whole island, it starts from 24 to 50 meters deep

·          GROTTA DELLE CIPREE: This large and evocative cave is intercepted with an entrance at a depth of about 18 m , from which you gradually rise to reach the emerged part

Ustica, however, is not only the sea, although the color and clarity can make it truly the only magnet of the stay, but it is also nature and trekking such as the fortress of falconry, the midday path or the grove.

The staff is made up of highly qualified people, instructors and guides, who have years of experience and who will accompany you to discover the wonderful underwater world of Ustica.
Some of over 12 spots available on the island:
SECCA DELLA COLOMBARA
Type of dive: Dry
Minimum certification: From today also Technical diving
Level: Medium / High
Depth: 5/40 mt
Current: Frequent and constant
La Colombara shoal has a large hat, like a terrace, and has a whole series of interesting sides that allow you to set up different dives based on the level of certifications and experience. Together with the Secchitello and the Scoglio del Medico, it represents the top spot of Ustica: an incredible place to be experienced, with clear water and lots of fish.
CAVE OF THE CIPREE
Type of dive: Grotta / Cave
Minimum patent: Advanced
Level: Medium
Depth: 18/22 mt
Current: Absent
This large and evocative cave is intercepted with an entrance at a depth of about 18 m, from which you gradually ascend to reach the emerged part which has a huge air chamber where you can stop and look at the unknown side of the cave. This environment, hidden in absolute darkness, is visible only to divers armed with illuminators: with the changing colors of the lava and the designs created on the reddish stone from the roots of the plants above, the show is certainly worth experiencing over and over again with the staff .
CALA GALERA
Type of dive: Wall / Rock landslide
Minimum patent: Open Water
Level: easy
Depth: 15/30 mt
Current: Medium / Occasional
The "Galera" is a strip of rock protruding perpendicular to the coast that recalls the shape of a Roman ship: from here we start, underwater, for an interesting underwater journey among stacks of large boulders scattered on a very bright seabed and with water clear, where the fish is surprisingly abundant and the groupers, for some time, have allowed themselves to be approached more easily than other sites on the island.
THE BUCKET
Type of dive: Shoal / Pinnacles
Level: High
Minimum patent: Advanced / Deep
Depth: 24/50 mt
Currents: Strong, Constant and frequent
Considered the most demanding dive of the whole island, due to the descent into the blue and the depth, the Secchitello is placed on a detrital / sandy bottom extended on the 40/60 m bathymetric from which a series of rocky pinnacles of imposing dimensions grouped together to form a single shoal.
The site offers spiers with different morphology and extends abundantly in width towards the bottom. It is sometimes possible to admire the fusion at the base of the same and at the same time enjoy the vision of scenarios of rare beauty, with vertical walls colonized by a different life.
PUNTA DELL’ARPA
Dive type: Wall / Rocks
Minimum patent: Open water / Advanced
Level: Medium
Maximum depth: 15 / 40mt
Current: Frequent
This beautiful ground dive of the Secchitello, overlooking the tip which derives its name from its shape similar to that of a musical instrument, is to be considered partly in landslide and partly along the wall. An almost vertical rocky slope reaches the sandy bottom around 30/35 m deep.
PUNTA GAVAZZI
Type of dive: Archaeological
Level: easy
Minimum patent: Open Water
Maximum depth: 12/20 mt
Current: Light / Occasional
The various ships that landed did not always manage to raise their anchors and it was decided over time not to recover them but to set up an underwater museum where the itinerary is indicated by special signs and thematic panels, following the Ariadne's thread we also find some Roman and pre-Roman amphorae probably remains of a shipwreck.
It is easy to visit, all you need is curiosity and self-contained breathing apparatus.
